NEW YORK CITY … get CARRIED away

Written: August 2008

This is dedicated to the gorgeous women of substance searching for requited love. Some who have passion for labels and to those that have strong bonds with the descendants of Aphrodite …

This is coming in full circle with my love story with the series “SATC“. After six seasons and a movie, I felt I have grown older with the fabulous women of the Big Apple. There is a Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbes and Samantha Jones in all of us despite the age bracket or status in life. They exchange opinions – unsolicited or otherwise – over a glass of Cosmopolitan donned in designer ensembles in by-invitation private rendezvous in Manhattan.

Carrie is the female protagonist whose love for writing in her Mac was inspired by her incessant search for love and commitment. She is into the eccentric fashion – not for the timid and the plain. She gave birth to the personalized necklaces in diamonds and silver. She is the lady who opted for a walk-in closet rather than a 1 carat diamond ring as an engagement gift. Her investments are found in Manolo Blahniks and Jimmy Choos. Walking in the streets of Manhattan is like traversing the Ford Runway.

Charlotte is reproductively challenged as she aptly put it. She is an all American prim and proper woman who went through a tough divorce and found a second heaven in the company of a Jewish guy. Her classic wardrobe and pearl accessories make up her look comparable to Grace Kelly. An exercise and organic food lover. The Super Ego in the Freudian language. Always stick to the norms and values - her guiding principle.

Miranda is the ultimate career woman. She has a Type A personality who fell in love with a bum. She wed in a private garden and transferred to Brooklyn. Her personal style is designer business attire which fits her role as a corporate warrior. She had done several things she swore she’d never do: married Steve, had a baby and move to Brooklyn.

Samantha is the sensuous 50 year cougar and PR Manager who had faced the hard realities: a battle with breast cancer and the realization that she can love somebody despite her claims that she won’t fall in love seriously. She moved to a seaside beach house in Los Angeles with Smith but her free spirit got bored and had to go back to New York again.

“New York is definitely haunted. Old lovers, ex-boyfriends, anyone you have unresolved issues with you are bound to run into again and again until you resolve them.” It is either you are too coward to face him, too caught up with your life to find out what might have been or too scared to rediscover that it’s not a dying ember after all. It is too daunting to get scorched at this day and age. “When a relationship dies do we ever really give up the ghost or are we forever haunted by the spirits of relationships past.”

Charlotte has just told the girls about a magazine article she read which said that a woman only gets two "great loves" in her lifetime. When asked with a question: “Have you met your two “great loves” in your lifetime?” We can only hope we have because there are so many complications in this part of our lives right now that meeting another great love would be ruin everything we have toiled for. Women basically love with utter abandon and it’s never fair. There are nights that looking up in the sky and seeing the vastness of the universe …, a question nags your head, “do we really need distance to get close?”

"Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are those that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, and those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. “

In one memorable episode, Mr. Big wrote “… if ever you get lonely …” tucked inside a two-way plane ticket to Napa with Henry Mancini’s Moon River softly playing in the background. There is a longing that crushed my heart till the song faded away in the wind.

One day, I hope to walk the streets of NY with someone who appreciates the City as much as I do ... I would also love to stay indoors eat chocolates ... drink wine while listening to music surrounded by arts and the comforts of home ... with my Mr. Big.

  1. “Maybe mistakes are what make our fate... without them
what would shape our lives? Maybe if we had never veered off course we
wouldn't fall in love, have babies, or be who we are. After all, things
change, so do cities, people come into your life and they go. But it's
comforting to know that the ones you love are alway...s in your heart...
and if you're very lucky, a plane ride away” - SATC ending of 4th season voice over - I LUV NY
